Historical
The
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. Team, established
in 1980 and originally consisting of twelve members, is currently
comprised of fourteen specially selected deputies that are
on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to
their regular assigned duties S.W.A.T. members train as a
team on a monthly basis to enhance the skills and abilities
of each individual. Development of physical strength and spontaneity
of reflexes is stressed. These individuals possess such positive
qualities as independence of mind, self-discipline, motivation,
and physical stamina in adverse conditions. S.W.A.T. members
are highly trained in the use of special weapons and tactics
for the purpose of handling high-risk incidents. This to include
barricaded suspects, hostage situations, school violence incidents,high
risk arrest/search warrant service, and various other situationsrequiring
their specialized training and expertise.
A
Crisis Negotiation Team is assigned when the situation warrants.
Components of the S.W.A.T. Team consist of Entry Teams, Arrest
Teams, Sniper/Scout Teams and a Paramedic Team.

Team stands as proud recognition of the team's elite members.
Encircled by twelve stars representing the twelve original
members of the team, the emblem bears the departmental badge
at the inset.
