The
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Crime Laboratory is a
support unit to all divisions of the Sheriff's Office and
also provides services to local, state and federal law enforcement
agencies. Since taking office in 1996, Sheriff Strain has
obtained valuable equipment for the crime lab, including a
state of the art fingerprinting computer system to search
fingerprints recovered at the scene of a crime, the prints
are entered into a database and compared to criminal prints
on file.
The
Sheriff has also established a complete forensic light source
unit within the crime lab. Using forensic
light source, crime lab technicians can locate and collect
small traces of evidence at crime scenes such as hairs, fibers,
body fluids, latent fingerprints, etc.
In 1999 the Sheriff's crime lab, in cooperation with the Federal
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, became part of a
worldwide computerized network of crime laboratories that
enter, search, and identify fired bullets and casings collected
from crime scenes. Our crime lab is only the second network
site in the state and one of less than 100 sites worldwide.
As
we look forward to the future, our continuing growth will
help in crime solvability and help faster serve the needs
of the public.
